WLHS Viking Band -
A Comprehensive Band Program

Viking Band

The Viking Band meets daily and is open to all members of the WLHS student body with the ability to perform on a band instrument.  The band consists of a competitive marching band in the fall and a concert band the remainder of the year.

Marching Band

Our marching band competes as part of the WSMA circuit in the fall of each year.  All students enrolled in our band program are automatically part of the marhcing band.  We travel to local marching shows and participate in the WSMA State Marching Band Championships.

Concert Band

The concert band functions for a majority of the year as one of the premier music ensembles at WLHS.  The conductor for the concert band is Mrs. Patty Bailey.  In addition to rehearsing standard wind literature as a 90 piece group, at times we may break into two ability based bands during the winter.

Wind Ensemble is a small group of our advanced musicians, typically only one person is on a part.

The Symphonic Band seeks to grow our musicians so they may achieve musical excellence in our band program.

Brass Choir
One of our most active ensembles, the Brass Choir rehearses on Wednesdays 3:15-4:30p.m.  This ensemble is open to any musician who can play a brass instrument; no auditions are required to join this group.  The Brass Choir typically performs at Milwaukee area churches, provides music for our Festival Worship Services, Chapel Services and Choir Concerts.  The Brass Choir is directed by Mr. Jordan Beckman.

Clarinet Choir
Our Clarinet Choir is open to all clarinet players in the WLHS Band program.  This group will be directed by Rachel Tolkinen and will meet on Thursdays 3:15-4:30pm.  Our goal is to have the Clarinet Choir travel to local WELS Congregations, events, and prepare for WSMA.

Color Guard
Tryouts for the Color Guard are open to any member of the WLHS student body, however, a majority of its members are part of the band program.  Most of the Color Guard performances and rehearsals are coordinated with the marching band.  This is a dedicated group of girls looking to add a wonderful element of visual impact to the marching band through the use of flags, rifles, and dance movements.  The Color Guard is under the leadership of Ms. Angela Schmill.

Jazz Ensemble
This is a co-curricular ensemble which requires an audition for seating placement.  Performances are given throughout the year at grade schools, churches, at the annual Benefit Concert and for the Prism concerts.  Rehearsals are Tuesdays 3:15 - 4:30 p.m.  In addition to traditional band instruments, electric guitar, bass guitar, and piano players are encouraged to join this ensemble.  Mrs. Patty Bailey is the director of the Jazz Ensemble.

Pep Band
Pep Band is a fun, very relaxed atmosphere where we support our teams with great music.  No auditions are neccessary for this group and rehearsals take place 45 minutes prior to events.  Performances are for WIAA Football Playoff games, selected boys and girls basketball games, wrestling tournaments and pep rallies.  If you're looking to have fun and cheer on our Viking athletics, this is the group for you!  Ms. Angela Schmill is coordinating this group.

Flute Choir
Flute Choir is open to all flautists in the WLHS Band.  They rehearse on Wednesdays 3:15 - 4:30 p.m.  In addition to the traditional soprano flutes, students also have the option to try our Alto and Bass Flutes.  The Flute Choir performs at local congregations and for the Choir Concerts at WLHS.  This ensemble is directed by Mrs. Patty Bailey.

Saxophone Choir
Our Saxophone Choir is directed by Ms. Angela Schmill.  Rehearsals are on Mondays 3:15-4:30p.m..  The Sax Choir will perform throughout the year for area congregations and WLHS Chapel services.

Pit Orchestra
Pit orchestra rehearses once a week begining in January until 2 weeks prior to the musical when rehearsals are then every night.  Depending on the chosen musical for the spring, the Pit Orchestra can be as large as 30 or as small as 15 members.  Traditionally, we have strings (violin, viola, cello and bass) in addition to wind and percussion instruments.  Membership in this ensemble is by invitation of the Director of Bands.  This year's Pit Orchestra will be conducted by Mr. Jordan Beckman.

Other Small Ensembles
The following ensembles are formed for the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival.  They have their rehearsal during the band hour and sometimes these ensembles have the opportunity to perform for Chapel Services and at other concert venues.

Dixieland Combo, Jazz Combo, Woodwind Ensemble I & II, Trumpet Choir I & II, Sax Choir II, Percussion Ensemble, Trombone Choir, and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble.
